It’s Carter’s first Halloween! And we are off to Hogwarts! I am so excited to share our family Harry Potter Halloween costume that took me weeks to think about and only moments to put it all together. My husband and I haven’t actually celebrated Halloween since we were in college doing “college things”. But I always loved watching my sister dress up my niece and nephew in their costumes because she always has a way of dressing them up creatively and reflective of their personality. We chose the Harry Potter theme with an adult Gryffindor costume and a baby costume to match based off of being able to find ways for all of us to be involved and because of my love for books that I want to share with my son (so much that I’m hoping to take him to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal at some point in time since we already did a family vacation to Disney World).

HARRY POTTER HALLOWEEN COSTUME
We are still determining whether Carter will join his cousins in trick-or-treating this year, or whether we will just sit on the front porch and hand out candy to the kids in the neighborhood, but either way, Carter is set to celebrate his first Halloween as a two-month old heading to Gryffindor with our family Harry Potter Halloween costume. When I started looking for our family Halloween outfit, I began it by basing it on what we could find for Carter in his size. Many costumes were for 0-6m or 3-6m which were way too big for him. Finally, I found out that buybuy BABY had tons of Halloween costumes and found a Harry Potter outfit that would fit him exactly.
After finding his look, everything else fell into place. With just a few clicks on Amazon to pick out the dress pieces for mom, dad, and the fur baby, and then we were all set for our family Harry Potter Halloween costume.
PUTTING TOGETHER YOUR HARRY POTTER HALLOWEEN COSTUME
If you’re planning on doing a Harry Potter Halloween costume this year, it’s a lot easier than you think. And it can actually be a very budget-friendly Halloween costume idea because you can DIY the costume with pieces from different stores. The first thing that you need to do before making any purchase is to choose your house – Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff. Each person in your family can be a different house, and it won’t make much of a difference on the search because each house and the house colors are easy to find on a variety of different stores.
The second thing that you want to do is to determine whether you are just going to be everyday students, or if you are wanting to be a character. In college, I had friends who had went as Luna Lovegood and Hermione Granger in Harry Potter instead of being just another student. The extra level of becoming one of the actual Harry Potter characters is choosing wigs or coloring your hair and maybe adding a scar and pet to bring the entire costume together. But not matter whether you’re creating adult Harry Potter costumes or a kids Harry Potter costume, you’ll be able to shop with ease and put your Harry Potter costumes together pretty quickly even when shopping for the baby costumes.
When shopping, it sometimes can be more cost efficient to buy the different pieces separately instead of fully purchasing a Harry Potter costume from a Halloween store such as Spirit Halloween. Some of the costumes can run upwards of $50+ when you buy an official Halloween costume, but if you decide to search for pieces individually online like on Amazon, you may save some money. For me, it was cheaper to do it in pieces for the adult Harry Potter costumes because I didn’t have to buy some of the more expensive pieces such as the pants, shirts, or skirt.
The costume accessories of the outfit are what it really comes down to such as buying a tie, scarf, wand, and if you’re going big, the robe. I found that when shopping for a robe that has a specific house crest, the Gryffindor robe was definitely little more easier to find in a style that I liked, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any other styles out there. You can definitely find a Slytherin robe if that is the house that you belong to.
SHOPPING FOR HARRY POTTER BABY COSTUMES AND TODDLER COSTUMES
It’s a lot easier to shop for adult Harry Potter costumes and Harry Potter costumes for older kids than it is to shop for Harry Potter baby or toddler costumes – especially if you are looking for them to dress in a different house outside of Gryffindor. But I will say that it’s not completely impossible. For the most part, you’ll find that many of the Harry Potter baby and toddler costumes that are Gryffindor and that you’ll need to get a little bit more creative and go outside the box for other houses. Start with searching on website that sell Universal merchandise as they may specifically sell more pieces for younger children than other places then expand to Halloween stores and Amazon before you start having to head to shopping more custom pieces or doing something a little more DIY.
