TRAVEL GUIDE: NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

GETTING TO Nashville TENNESSEE

Nashville is a city that is pretty easy to get to. Whether it’s the beginning, middle, or end of your trip, your mode of arrival will largely depend on where you’re coming from. During our visit for a weekend in Nashville, we spoke with other travelers about their experience getting into Nashville, and a few mentioned renting a car from the airport. However, many noted that they wished they hadn’t due to traffic and the difficulty of finding parking downtown. If you’re considering that option, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you plan to explore outside the city—otherwise, flying in or taking a bus or train is much more convenient.

By Air: Depending on your departure city, flying may be the easiest way to get to Nashville. If it’s your first stop, you’ll land at Nashville International Airport (BNA), which is about a 15-minute drive from downtown when traffic is light. Even if you’re coming from another city in the U.S., direct flights to Nashville are often affordable, especially on budget airlines. From nearby cities like Atlanta or Charlotte, flights are under an hour and can cost less than $100 one way. With multiple daily flights from major hubs, flying is often the fastest and most convenient option.

By Bus: If you’re coming from a city without a nearby airport or prefer a budget-friendly option, taking a bus into Nashville is another possibility. Several bus companies, including Greyhound and Megabus, offer routes from major cities like Memphis, Louisville, and Atlanta. The ride from Memphis, for example, takes about four hours and can cost as little as $30 per ticket.

By Train: While train travel isn’t as common for reaching Nashville, there are still some options depending on where you’re coming from. Amtrak does not have a station in Nashville, but nearby cities like Memphis and Atlanta have Amtrak stops. If you’re open to a combination of train and bus travel, you can take a train into one of these cities and then hop on a short bus or rental car ride into Nashville. Checking schedules and routes ahead of time is key to determining whether this option works for you.

Navigating AROUND NASHVILLE

Once in Nashville, getting around is fairly simple, with multiple transportation options depending on your plans. While downtown is walkable, you’ll likely find yourself mixing in other ways to explore, especially if you plan to visit different neighborhoods like The Gulch, 12 South, or East Nashville. Driving isn’t always the best option for navigating the city, as parking can be limited and expensive in busy areas like Broadway. During our visit, we did get a rental car which was fairly reasonable in price, but parking did become the major issue. The garages and parking lots can range from $15 – $60 depending on the duration and some places only let you set the time for the entire day even if you are staying for an hour or less. Lots in Nashville also have license plate scanners which will capture your license plate the moment that your car is sitting in a space for too long – so it’s either pay the parking fee or pay an expensive ticket if you try to avoid it.

Many visitors find that walking or using ride shares is the most efficient way to get around. However, if you’re looking to explore beyond the main tourist areas, there are several transportation options to consider during your weekend in Nashville.

Taxi: While taxis are available in Nashville, they are not as commonly used as other options. Fares vary based on distance, but they tend to be more expensive than ride shares. If you do opt for a taxi, you can typically find them at the airport, major hotels, and downtown hotspots like Broadway.

Ride Share: Uber and Lyft are the most popular ride share options in Nashville. They are widely used by both tourists and locals, making it easy to get around without worrying about parking. Fares can surge during busy times, especially on weekends or during major events, but they’re generally affordable for short trips.

Bus: The WeGo Public Transit system offers bus routes throughout Nashville, making it an affordable way to travel. Single-ride fares are inexpensive, and you can purchase passes for unlimited rides if you plan to use the bus frequently. The system is useful for reaching areas outside of downtown that might not be as accessible by foot.

Scooters & Bikes: Electric scooters and bikes are popular in Nashville, especially for short trips around the city. Companies like Bird, Lime, and Spin have rental stations throughout downtown, allowing you to quickly hop on and explore without needing a car. Just be mindful of pedestrian areas and local traffic laws when riding.

Tip: If you plan on visiting multiple attractions during your weekend in Nashville and using public transportation, consider getting a Nashville Sightseeing Pass. This pass provides discounts on major attractions and can include hop-on-hop-off trolley tours, which are a fun and convenient way to see the city without worrying about transportation logistics.

nashville music musuem
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC

Visiting the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville was such a powerful experience that gave me a deeper understanding of how Black music has shaped and influenced American culture. The museum takes you on an incredible journey through time, beginning with the rich roots of church music and spirituals, and then progressing through the evolution of Black music genres. From the rhythms of African drumming to the soul-stirring hymns of the church, the museum lays out how these early musical influences paved the way for some of the most iconic sounds in history.

What made this museum stand out were the immersive, interactive exhibits that brought the music to life in ways that felt personal and engaging. There were stations where I could listen to different styles of music, try my hand at mixing tracks, and even interact with holographic displays of famous musicians and historical moments. It was fascinating to see how the museum uses technology to tell these stories, letting you explore the past and connect with it in real-time. I loved how hands-on the experience was, making it a perfect stop for both history buffs and music lovers alike.

One of the most impactful parts of the museum was how it traces the history of Black music all the way through to modern rap and hip hop, showing how each genre influenced the next. It felt like a celebration of Black musical innovation, highlighting how artists have used their voices to tell stories, challenge the status quo, and push boundaries. From jazz to R&B, rock, and rap, the National Museum of African American Music honors these pivotal moments and showcases the vital role that Black artists have played in shaping the musical landscape we know today. It was an inspiring experience, and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn more about the power of music and its role in history.

Bar hopping on Broadway in Nashville is an absolute blast, and it’s the perfect way to experience the city’s vibrant nightlife. The strip is lined with iconic honky-tonks and bars, each offering a unique weekend in Nashville experience. We spent our night hopping between spots like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, a legendary bar with a rich history of hosting famous country artists, and The Stage, known for its live music and energetic atmosphere. One of the best parts was hitting the rooftops of several bars, like at the Legends Corner, where we enjoyed refreshing drinks while taking in the stunning views of Broadway. The energy of the street below, with the neon lights and live music, made for an unforgettable experience

For a bit of added fun, we joined in on some activities along the way, like bull riding at one of the bars and learning a little line dancing at Category 10. It was such a fun and lively experience to take a spin on the mechanical bull, and I loved how everyone was in high spirits, encouraging each other. At Category 10, we joined a group line dance, and the instructors made it so easy to follow along. The entire night was a whirlwind of great music, delicious drinks, and a true Nashville experience that made bar hopping on Broadway so much more than just a night out—it was a celebration of music, culture, and a whole lot of fun.
