THE ORDINARY SKINCARE ROUTINE ORDER
When you’re new to the world of skincare, it can be hard to know where to begin. There are so many products on the market, and everywhere you turn online you find another skincare routine that you should be doing to get your best, brightest, healthiest skin. You don’t want to waste money on products that won’t work for your skin type or won’t achieve the results that you desire, but you don’t know which products are the ones for you. What’s a girl to do?
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent hours researching skin types and products trying to learn what would work best for you. But with a million brands out there, it’s hard to know who to trust and what to go with. The high end brands are renowned for their results, but they come with a pretty hefty price tag. Meanwhile, some of the cheaper products might leave you questioning their efficiency – but hey, they’re in your budget, right?
Trust me, I’ve been there, too. I’m a firm believer that skincare doesn’t need to be overly complicated, especially when you’re just starting out and discovering what works best for you personally. That’s why I fell in love with The Ordinary – and it’s why The Ordinary skincare routine order is changing the game. Their clean, easy to use products keep my skin looking great in the simplest way possible. Nothing is complicated or confusing with The Ordinary. Everything is easy to understand so I don’t have to guess what’s going to work. I know that with just a few simple steps my skin will get the boost it deserves – without emptying my wallet in the process.
WHAT IS THE ORDINARY?
The Ordinary was created “to celebrate integrity in its most humble and true form.” They use familiar, trusted skincare treatments formulated from simple ingredients – as few as possible – to create skincare products that are solid and effective without breaking the bank for their customers. They pride themselves on being open and honest, and operating with integrity at every turn – something that unfortunately isn’t always a standard in the world of skincare. I like shopping The Ordinary because I know that I can trust the brand. It helps me feel comfortable buying their products because I know what I’m getting, and also know that I’m not being needlessly upcharged.
I also like that their products make it clear from their names what the active ingredient is, so I know exactly what I’m putting on my skin. It’s helped me to understand what works for my skin and why, so I feel empowered to choose products that are best for me.
GOALS OF A GOOD SKINCARE ROUTINE
If you’re building out your first true skincare routine, what should you be looking for? What goals should you be trying to achieve? You know that you want healthier skin, but you might not know what specifically you are targeting. Let me walk you through what a good skincare routine should achieve for you.
First off, you want to create a routine that targets your skin’s unique needs. Everyone’s skin is a little different, so what works for one person may not work for you. Even the skincare routine below might not be your perfect fit – you might have to play around and experiment a little to see what your skin responds best to.
Everyone’s skin falls in a different category. Some people have dry skin, other people have oily skin. Some people have normal skin – meaning their skin doesn’t tend to lean towards oily or dry – while other people have combination skin, where parts of their face are oily while other parts are dry. You want to choose skincare products that are best optimized for your personal skin type. I always suggest reading product reviews from people who have the same type of skin that you do to see how the product works from their point of view – it often helps you discover if the product will do what you need it to.
First off a good skincare routine should improve skin texture and reduce uneven skin tone. With the help of a good skincare routine, your skin should become smooth and even, so you feel confident without a drop of makeup. Your skin just looks that good. Making sure that your skincare routine includes exfoliation is a key step in this process as it sloughs off dead skin cells, allowing your skin to become softer and brighter.
Next up, you want to make sure that your skincare routine includes lots of hydration and moisturizing. In order to keep your skin bright, healthy, and supple, you need to moisturize! One reason that I love The Ordinary products is that so many of them have natural moisturizing factors. Since hydration is one of my main skincare concerns – remember how much of your body is water! – I love products that support that and make sure they’re a part of my daily routine.
Finally, a good skincare routine should support the long-term health of your skin. By taking good care of your skin now, you can ensure that you age slowly and gracefully and that you have firm, beautiful, healthy skin for years to come. Your actions now have a direct result on your skin’s future, so take care of it! Trust me, your future self will thank you.
A GUIDE TO SKINCARE TERMINOLOGY
If you’re new to learning about skincare, the terminology can be confusing – especially because The Ordinary names all of their products after their active ingredients. But what do they all mean? Are all acids the same – and should you even be putting acid on your skin to begin with? Will oils clog your pores? What vitamins should you be on the lookout for? That’s why I want to give you a quick rundown of what these ingredients do so you know exactly why they are so important for your skin – and why The Ordinary skincare routine order is so life-changing.
HYALURONIC ACID: Hyaluronic acid is a key ingredient for moisturizing. It makes your skin, flexible, soft, and supple, and is also a great tool in the process of healing wounds and reducing scarring. Because hyaluronic acid is so hydrating and good for skin’s elasticity, it also can be a key ingredient to help in reducing fine lines and wrinkles. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydrating Serum is one of my favorite hydrating products on the market for this very reason.
SALICYLIC ACID: Salicylic acid is the exact opposite of hyaluronic acid – instead of hydrating and softening your skin, it exfoliates it. It helps to exfoliate your skin, control the production of oil, and generally keep your pores clean and clear. It’s able to truly penetrate deep into your pores for a really solid clean, and is known as one of the best tools to fight acne scars.
SQUALANE: Squalane is another incredible hydrating agent for your skin. It’s often compared to hyaluronic acid, but squalane is in many ways the superior of the two products. Unlike hyaluronic acid, squalane is also a protectant, and it has antioxidant properties, which are incredible for your skin’s overall health. I love The Ordinary squalane cleanser because it does a fantastic job of both cleaning and hydrating my skin as the perfect start to my day.
GLYCOLIC ACID: Glycolic acid has two main benefits. First, it exfoliates skin by removing dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin. This can be beneficial for people who struggle with acne, sun damage, aging skin, and dark spots. Glycolic acid works as a fantastic toner, and I love using The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toning Solution for healthier, more glowy skin. Additionally, glycolic acid works to help boost collagen production, which helps skin retain its firmness and elasticity as you age.
ASCORBIC ACID: You might be more familiar with ascorbic acid by another name – Vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is vital in the production of collagen, which helps skin stay strong and healthy with age. It also help with skin healing and repair, so you are able to get back to healthy skin more quickly when something goes wrong.
COMMON SKINCARE QUESTIONS
You have questions? Don’t worry: I have answers.
WILL ACIDS hurt my skin?
No, using products with “acid” in the title won’t hurt your skin. These products are created specifically to help your skin, not hurt it. While people with sensitive skin may need to be careful with acids that work as exfoliants, such as salicylic acid, there’s no reason to be scared off by a skincare product just because it’s referred to as an acid. Remember, some acids, such as hyaluronic acid, even work to hydrate your skin and make it softer, not drier. It’s just a process of learning what works best for you and your skin’s specific needs.
WILL OILS clog my pores?
If you already struggle with oily skin, being told to use an oil on your skin might sound like the worst idea in the world. Why would you add more oil to skin that’s already producing too much? While you may want to limit the use of facial oils if your skin is already producing oil in excess, don’t be scared away from oils completely. In fact, some oils are targeted at oily skin to train your skin to naturally make less oil. If you are prone to oily skin, just do some research before diving in to a new product. You’ll never know if something will work for you without looking into what it is – beyond the label.
WHAT vitamins DOES MY SKIN NEED?
Just like the rest of your body, your skin needs vitamins to be healthy and strong. You get many of the vitamins that your skin needs through simply maintaining a healthy diet, but it doesn’t hurt to use skincare products that supplement your diet for an extra boost of vitamins. Keep an eye out for products that feature Vitamins A, C, D, and E, as all four play a huge role in the health of your skin. They help your skin to repair more quickly when damaged, and make your complexion brighter and clearer.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO MY skincare routine?
Every. Single. Day! Caring for your skin isn’t something that you should just do as a hobby or when the mood strikes. If you want to see real results and healthier skin, you have to put in the effort each and every day. I know that might sound overwhelming at first, but once you get into the habit of it, it will become as natural as brushing your teeth each morning or putting your contact lenses in. I actually find myself looking forward to doing my skincare routine each day. The rhythm of it is almost meditative in its sameness, and I love having a few minutes to breathe, decompress, and take care of myself as I get ready for the day or begin to wind down for the night. Even if it feels tedious at first, stick it out. Results don’t come overnight, and just testing out a few skincare products won’t immediately give you the glowing, healthy skin that you want to see in the mirror. It’s only through steady repetition and building the habit of taking care of your skin that you will truly begin to see the results you want!
DO I HAVE TO DO THE SAME THING every time?
Yes and no. In many ways, your skin benefits from consistency – it’s able to build on the products that you use each day to heal and make your complexion the best it can be. But sometimes you have to experiment, especially at the beginning. Initially, some toners or specific, targeted products shouldn’t be used every day because they are too harsh for your skin to use constantly.
