A Romantic Escape to Remember: Our Stay at Secrets Tulum Resort & Beach Club

Location: Mexico, Central America,
secrets tulum mimosa breakfast

As parents of two young kids, finding time to reconnect without diapers, dishes, and daily chaos can feel nearly impossible. But after weeks of juggling schedules and late nights, we decided it was time for another much-needed parent’s getaway and we decided on heading to Secrets Tulum. Tulum had always been on our travel bucket list—the boho-chic vibe, the clear turquoise water, and the blend of culture and luxury pulled us in. So when we found out that Secrets opened a brand new location there and that the resort wanted to host us for a stay, we instantly knew it was the perfect match for our romantic retreat.

Over the years, we’ve come to love and trust Secrets Resorts for our couple’s escapes. Everything that the Secrets brand represents is exactly what we needed for us to reconnect as parents. In the past we have been to Secrets Resort in Jamaica as well as Secrets Riviera Cancun. Both of those properties were amazing, so naturally, we had high expectations going into this trip to Secrets Tulum Resort & Beach Club—and let me just say, it did not disappoint. In this blog post, I’m sharing our experience and thoughts on everything from the rooms to the pools and the dining and everything in between.

SECRETS TULUM RESORT & BEACH CLUB

Secrets Tulum Resort & Beach Club is a luxurious, all-inclusive adults-only resort set in the heart of Tulum’s tranquil jungle, seamlessly blending eco-chic design with upscale modern amenities. Over the years, I had always heard great things about Tulum’s aesthetic and all the great cenotes and experiences you can have there. So as my husband and I planned our next parent’s getaway, Tulum was at the top of the list. From the moment we arrived, the peaceful surroundings and welcoming staff set the tone for what would be an unforgettable vacation. The property is beautifully designed to mimic the natural elements of Tulum with lush vegetation, tranquil pools, and bohemian-inspired architecture that makes you feel like you’re tucked away in a dream.

HOW TO GET TO Tulum & THE Resort

We flew directly into the new Tulum International Airport, which made things incredibly convenient. The airport is very easy to navigate and flying in and out of Tulum super easy. In the past, there wasn’t the ability to fly into Tulum. You’d fly into Cancun and then drive nearly two hours, so this new airport cut our travel time significantly. After landing, we arranged a private transfer through Amstar – which is affiliated with Secrets Resorts and also does the excursions with Secrets. It was smooth, air-conditioned, and well worth the cost for an stress-free experience.

THE Rooms

There are several room types to choose from at Secrets Tulum, but we ended up staying the Preferred Club Rooftop Master Suite with Plunge Pool and if you’re looking at this suite, I would tell you to stop thinking about it and just book it because it is worth every penny. The suite was spacious and stylish, featuring neutral tones, artisanal decor, and modern comforts like a king-size bed, two bathrooms – one being the vast master bath with rain shower and bathtub and the other a guest bathroom – ,a dining area, a balcony with a tub, and, of course, the star of the show: our private rooftop area that including plenty of seating and plunge pool. As part of the Preferred Club, we also had upgraded amenities including a personalized mini bar, daily restocked snacks, and premium toiletries.

There are tons of other great room options at Secrets Tulum. You can find swim outs that I am often a huge fan of as well as other Club Level and “regular” rooms and suites. But if anything, one thing that I highly recommend you book for an in-room experience is the mimosa breakfast in bed. We decided that on our last morning in Tulum to do the mimosa breakfast in bed, which we arranged through the concierge, and it was something that I would recommend to anyone. The food was good and just being able to have breakfast in bed while watching some morning TV started the day off right.

THE Restaurants & Bars

One of the highlights of any Secrets resort is the food—and Tulum delivered on every level. With a wide variety of restaurants, we never had to eat the same thing twice unless we wanted to. We were only at Secrets Tulum for three nights so we didn’t get to dine at every restaurant, but I’m going to share our experience at the restaurants and bars we did eat and enjoy cocktails at.

BLUEWATER GRILL

Bluewater Grille is a resort favorite. It was recommended to us when we first arrived so we made sure to make this the first place that we dined. It’s a mixture of grille styled steak and seafood with a “Tulum twist”. The restaurant is located in a very aesthetic outdoor setting and they set the vibe very well with the surrounding small pools, candles, and hanging lights. I recommend getting there on the earlier side if you are planning on dining there because it can get very busy very fast and there are no reservations. For dinner, we enjoyed perfectly grilled cuts of meat and fish paired with fresh sides in an elegant but relaxed setting. I started off with some tuna, which was well prepared and then for my main meal, I went with the ribeye. The ribeye was juicy and full of flavor, and the service was exceptional.

JASMINE

Dining at this Pan-Asian spot transported us across the globe. I’m a sucker for sushi, so I knew that this was going to be one of the places that we were going to dine for dinner. They have a variety of sushi rolls along with other great main courses. I ended up with edamame, a sushi roll – which came as a great portion – , and ramen for dinner. My husband opted for a fried rice dish which he very much enjoyed, and there were plenty of other options on the menu that it would be one that we would have re-visited if we had stayed at the resort longer. Additionally, if you are a Preferred Club guest, Jasmine offers breakfast each morning as an additional amenity for the guest level. We popped over to breakfast one morning and everything on the menu was delicious. They had smoothies, breakfast burritos, a French toast platter that was a blend of sweet and savory, and so many other options.

MARKET CAFE

Market Cafe is the buffet style restaurant that is at Secrets Tulum. We ate here when we first arrived at the resort when our room wasn’t quite ready and we needed to grab some food because we were hungry. The restaurant is the go-to breakfast and lunch spot on the property and offered a variety of different foods so that any person can find something to eat. Everything was fresh and beautifully presented. There were a couple of times where I just popped into the buffet to grab a smoothie and a small plate of food when I was in between meals. The fast service and the ability to just grab how much you want and what you want made it super convenient.

THE GROTTO

Exclusively for Preferred Club guests, The Grotto is both a pool and a restaurant. We didn’t necessarily eat at the restaurant but did pop over to the pool a couple of times and since they offer service at the pool, we were able to grab a few bites from the restaurant to see what they were serving. I, of course, was more concerned with the cocktails and the margaritas they made were on point. I even grabbed some light bites such as ceviche which I thoroughly enjoyed for the few moments that we were at the pool. Even though this is an exclusive area, it does get filled quite quickly because it’s a little smaller than some of the areas where everyone can access.

OLIO

Olio is the Italian restaurant on property that probably ended up being one of my favorite restaurants on property. The aesthetic of the restaurant, both indoor and outdoor, is amazing, but if you are dining on a late evening at sunset when it’s not too hot in Tulum, I recommend sitting outside. If you happen to be there when the entertainment starts, it’s basically dinner and show. The pasta offerings at Olio were delicious, but not as big as a typical Italian restaurant in the US would be. So make sure to get an appetizer if you’re looking for a full meal, which shouldn’t be a problem because they have great appetizer options. I recommend the carpaccio.

RENDEZVOUZ

Located in the main lobby, Rendezvous had a lively but laid-back vibe. Great spot for a nightcap or post-dinner espresso martini. When my husband and I were in between activities, we tended to end up at this bar just to grab a couple of drinks and chat with the mixologists. The service here was top notch and because the lobby area is very open air and spacious, it gave a nice relaxing vibe while enjoying a cocktail. And even if there is not much room at the bar, you can still sit in the lobby area and they have servers who will come take your order and bring you drinks from the bar.

Some of the other places to eat and drink around the property that I heard good things about but we didn’t get to enjoy are

  • Skybar – A rooftop bar gave us some of the best views on the property. We loved going up around sunset, sipping cocktails while watching the sky turn colors.
  • Edgewater – A beachside bar that served frozen drinks, beer, and everything in between. The breeze, the sound of the ocean, and a piña colada in hand—what more could you want?
  • Barefoot Grille – Perfect for casual poolside bites. We grabbed burgers, tacos, and fries without needing to change out of our swimsuits. Super convenient and always tasty.
  • Veranda – This chic bar was our favorite place for a quiet pre-dinner drink. The mixologists were true artists, and the craft cocktails were both innovative and delicious.

THE Pools

The pools at Secrets Tulum are unlike any I’ve ever experienced. Designed to mimic natural cenotes, they were not only visually stunning but also had a calming, almost spiritual ambiance. There are several pools to choose from depending on your vibe—whether you want lively music and energy or a quiet, tucked-away spot for lounging. What I especially loved about the variety of pools is that each one had its own aesthetic and vibe. One pool was bigger and little more lively while others were smaller and a little more intimate. All of the pools have service, so you can get drinks and/or food brought to you if you’re interested. But one thing I did notice is the service typically didn’t start until the afternoon. So if you’re planning on getting to the pools early to claim your spot, just prepare to have to walk to the bar to get any drinks, if you happen to be looking for any.

One of the biggest perks of being in the Preferred Club was access to The Grotto, an exclusive pool with a secluded feel. The daybeds and cabanas around all the pools offered plenty of comfort, and we often spent entire days poolside, alternating between refreshing dips and long naps in the shade.

Zamna BEACH CLUB

One important thing to note: Secrets Tulum Resort is not located directly on the beach. Instead, the resort provides a convenient shuttle that takes you to the Zamna Beach Club, a beautifully designed extension of the resort that gives you all the beach vibes you came to Tulum for.

At the beach club, you’ll find sandy beachfront, multiple pools, and the Rosewater restaurant, which serves delicious food with a relaxed oceanfront vibe. There’s also a separate Preferred Club area, complete with upgraded loungers and attentive service. You can also reserve private cabanas, which we did—and it came with bottle service that made us feel like VIPs for the day. The reserved cabanas start around $250 USD but come with an entire bottle of your choosing – we went for tequila – and all the necessary juices, ice, fruits, etc. that you would want to make your drinks.

For those looking to stay beachside, Secrets Tulum does provide the ability for you to stay at the Zamna property which has different rooms and, of course, is away from the main property. Additionally, for those looking for the ultimate VIP experience, there is also a Villa that is available for stays but it doesn’t come at hefty price.

ENTERTAINMENT

Secrets Tulum brought the fun in all the right ways. Throughout our stay, we experienced a range of entertainment and activities that kept things fresh and exciting every day. By day, the entertainment team hosted pool parties with live DJs, fun games like trivia and water aerobics, and themed dance lessons. Wen ended up playing a few rounds of Bingo and going for the local bike tour while we were there.

At night, the resort came alive with unique cultural performances. One evening, we enjoyed a mesmerizing Mayan dance show that gave us a taste of local tradition. Another night featured an impressive circus performance complete with fire dancers and acrobats that had the whole crowd on their feet.

There were also more laid-back options for those who preferred a quieter evening—karaoke nights, movie screenings under the stars, and even a silent disco. It felt like there was something for every mood, and it added to the overall magic of the resort.

THE Spa

The spa at Secrets Tulum is an absolute must. Whether you’re into massages, facials, or full-on wellness rituals, the spa has you covered. Upon entering the spa, you immediately feel relaxed. The check-in process is super smooth and then once you are taken to the locker rooms to get yourself ready, you can wait in their calming waiting rooms as you prepare for your service. For us, we decided to take party of the hydrotherapy circuit. It is one of the most unique and rejuvenating services that we had experienced because it included some parts that we had not experienced in other hydrotherapy circuits. The circuit at Secrets Tulum Spa featured a dry sauna, an ice exfoliation area, warm and cold plunge pools, a jacuzzi, and rain showers—it was heavenly.

After our hydrotherapy circuit, we also treated ourselves to a couple’s massage. As parent’s of two boys, there is a lot of tension that we hold – especially in our neck and shoulders from carrying around the little one. The massage was wonderful and fitted to our needs. The tension melted away, and it gave us a rare opportunity to truly unwind together. The spa atmosphere is tranquil and gorgeously designed, adding yet another layer of luxury to the trip.

Preferred CLUB

Being part of the Preferred Club absolutely elevated our experience. Every time we stay at a Secrets Resort we opt for the Preferred club because it brings so many great amenities that not everyone staying at the resort received. If you’re considering going Preferred, I do recommend it. Beyond the upgraded room and rooftop pool, we had access to more private amenities that made everything feel more exclusive. From the personalized check-in (with champagne, of course) to the access to the Grotto and daily breakfast at Jasmine, the little perks made a big difference.

The Preferred Club Lounge was another favorite—ideal for grabbing a quiet drink or snack throughout the day. There were moments where we just wanted to relax and not be around much noise and also be near a bar, and the Preferred Club Lounge was the exact place to go to grab a couple of drinks and detach.

OUR OVERALL EXPERIENCE

Our overall experience at Secrets Tulum was nothing short of magical. Every detail—from the architecture to the service to the unforgettable experiences—made us feel like we were in a peaceful, luxurious bubble. What stood out most was that although the resort was busy and full of energy, it never felt crowded or overwhelming. It was the perfect balance of liveliness and relaxation. We especially loved the staff, everyone was absolutely attentive and I never felt that we were wanting for anything at any time. Even when we just started tho think we wanted something, someone was there ready to take care of it – which is exactly what we need for a parent’s getaway.

Tulum is on the rise, and it’s only a matter of time before it becomes one of those ultra-popular destinations that everyone is rushing to. Right now, it still feels like a hidden gem—especially with newer resorts like Secrets just beginning to shape the hospitality scene. If you’re even thinking about booking a trip, I highly recommend doing it soon before the secret is completely out.
