How to Style a Poncho for Fall

Fall Poncho

This season has been big on the poncho trend. I can’t even count on two hands how many stores I have visited that have shown them as a featured item. On many people, I love the look. But when I first began seeing the trend, I was hesitant to include it in my own wardrobe. With my petite frame, I thought that the piece was going to overtake me and make me look like a tiny person in a big top.

But after seeing the trend take on different versions, I decided to take a risk and try out the  look — and to my surprise, I didn’t drown in it!

There are many types and styles of ponchos. I’ve seen everything from plain designs to plaids. And even with designated holes for your arms to just a poncho that you drape over yourself. Some people have even multi-purposed the blanket scarf as a poncho to give their closet a little more versatility.

No matter how you decided to take on the poncho trend, the best way to style it is to make sure that everything matches together and that you don’t completely wash out your outfit.

For my poncho look, I decided to go with a basic style. The moss color allowed me to pair it with other neutral tones that are fit for the Autumn season. Underneath, I put on a mustard hued orange bodysuit that I could wear plainly if I took the poncho off when I went inside. Also, to bring a little edge to the outfit, I included a statement piece of jewelry that also went with the bodysuit underneath.

Essentially, I had two outfits in one – which is the main thing that you want to do when styling your poncho. Make sure that your top underneath matches with your shoes + accessories so that you can use the poncho as a top and as outerwear.

The versatility of it all is essential.
