Fall Family Photoshoot Outfit Ideas

fall photoshoot outfit ideas

This year, I was beyond excited to plan our family fall photoshoot now that we are officially a family of four! Having two boys makes these moments even more special, and I couldn’t wait to capture memories that will soon be part of our family photo wall. I’ve always loved the tradition of getting our fall pictures taken, but this year felt extra meaningful. I envisioned the perfect coordinated fall photoshoot outfit to reflect the warm, earthy tones of the season, and I was determined to make this shoot picture-perfect. I spent hours combing through the racks at my favorite stores, trying to find the right pieces for everyone.

The starting point for our outfits came from a beautiful fall dress I stumbled upon. The rich hues and flowy silhouette of the dress immediately spoke to me, and I knew it would be the perfect base. From there, I built out the looks for the rest of the family, making sure everything was cohesive but also reflected each of our personalities. With the dress as my guide, the boys ended up in adorable coordinating outfits, and I found the perfect ensemble for my husband too. And now that I have gone through the process, I want to share some inspiration for putting your Fall family photoshoot outfits together.

FAMILY FALL PHOTOSHOOT OUTFIT IDEAS

When it comes to putting together the perfect fall family photoshoot outfits, it can feel a bit overwhelming at first. There are so many elements to consider, from coordinating colors to making sure everyone feels comfortable and looks great together. My trick has always been to start with one statement piece, like a dress or patterned shirt, and use that as the foundation for the entire family’s look. Once I find that piece, I can build around it, pulling in complementary colors and textures to create a cohesive, yet varied, design that reflects our family’s style.

TIPS FOR PUTTING TOGETHER THE PERFECT Family Photoshoot Outfit

For our photoshoot this year, I started with a dress that I absolutely loved and built the rest of the outfits off of that. Since it had rich, warm tones like burgundy and mustard, I knew I wanted to keep the boys’ outfits neutral, but still playful with small pops of color. This approach kept everyone looking coordinated but not too matchy-matchy. Here are a few tips I’ve learned through the years for pulling together family photoshoot outfits that pop in the best way possible:

  • START WITH ONE STANDOUT PIECE
Find a key item you love—like a patterned dress, plaid shirt, or cozy sweater. For me, it was a fall dress with warm tones that set the tone for the entire family’s outfits.
  • CHOOSE A COHESIVE COLOR PALETTE
Once you have your statement piece, select a color palette of 2-3 main colors with some neutrals to balance it out. I stuck with deep fall hues for my dress and chose neutral tones for the boys to complement the look without overpowering it.
  • PLAY WITH TEXTURES
Mixing textures like knits, denim, or corduroy can add depth and interest to your photos. I paired my dress with a knit cardigan, while my husband’s outfit included a cozy sweater, adding variety to the overall look.
  • CONSIDER THE LOCATION
Think about the setting of your shoot when choosing colors and patterns. Since we were taking our photos outdoors in a woodsy area, I opted for earthy tones that would complement the autumn backdrop rather than compete with it.
  • COMFORT IS KEY
Make sure everyone’s outfits are not only stylish but also comfortable. For the kids, I found clothes that allowed them to move and play without fuss, because happy kids make for great photos!
